Jio Effect: TRAI to Discuss 'Minimum Floor Price' With Telcos on July 21. Freebies to End?

Jio Effect: TRAI to Discuss 'Minimum Floor Price' With Telcos on July 21. Freebies to End?

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Minimum floor price has been demanded by incumbent telecom operators
  • Jio still offers aggressive data plans
  • It's promotional freebies for seven months is blamed for financial woes
Regulator TRAI will meet all telecom service providers on July 21 to seek their views on 'minimum floor price' for voice and data tariffs, as being demanded by some operators, an official has said. The minimum floor price, for both data and voice calls, has been demanded by a section of incumbent telecom operators, but implementing it could mean an end to freebies in the market.

It may be recalled that Mukesh Ambani promoted Reliance Jio had stormed into the telecom market last year, wooing customers with promotional free voice and data services. Jio still offers aggressive data plans and has promised that voice calls will forever be free on its network.

In fact, Jio's promotional freebies for seven months is blamed by incumbent operators for the financial woes of the sector. The industry's debt stands at Rs. 4.6 lakh crores.

ALSO SEETRAI to Finalise Telecom Tariff Assessment Rules in a Month

The tariffs are currently under forbearance - operators virtually have a free hand in fixing the rates and report plans to TRAI in 7 days of launch - and, hence, a floor price setting, if it happens, would imply a shift from that regime.

The regulator will ask the operators to explain their views on 'minimum floor price' for tariffs, and also the formulation or math for the fixing such a rate, the official said.

During the meeting, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will seek the rationale for the floor price demand, and has asked operators to also give detailed presentation to support their arguments. It is also expected to ask the telcos why an upper ceiling for tariffs is not similarly justified.

The demand for imposition of a floor price first came up last month, at industry's meetings with the regulator and separately with the inter-ministerial group (IMG).

ALSO SEEJio vs Airtel vs Vodafone vs Idea Cellular vs BSNL: The Best Data Plans

Highlighting the growing financial stress on operators, Idea Cellular, in its presentation to the IMG had said that the industry has been witnessing losses and negative returns driven by below cost tariffs that are "predatory".

"Only solution is to have floor prices for voice, SMS, and data services so mobile telecom businesses generate adequate profits to invest and then compete based on quality of services" it had said citing nations like Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh which have such floors.

Gangnam Style again as Most Watched YouTube Video See You Again.

See You Again Dethrones Gangnam Style as Most Watched YouTube Video

HIGHLIGHTS

  • See You Again replaces Gangnam Style as YouTube's most seen video
  • Gangnam Style had 2.895 billion views on YouTube as of early Tuesday
  • Despacito is the fifth most-watched on YouTube
Gangnam Style, the quirky South Korean video that spawned a global dance craze and went so viral it nearly broke YouTube, has finally been dethroned as the most watched video.

After four and a half years as YouTube's most seen video, Gangnam Style slipped late Monday to number two, replaced by See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth.

Gangnam Style, a satirical take on the nouveau riche residents of the Seoul district by the same name, surprised even its singer, Psy, with its sudden global ascent in 2012.

Psy, who until Gangnam Style was little known outside of South Korea, found an avid fan base with the video's equestrian-style dance moves set to its infectious pop beat.

The video became the first to reach one billion views on YouTube and caused the site's engineers to scramble to make changes when it topped 2.1 billion views, previously thought to be the maximum possible.

As of early Tuesday US time, Gangnam Style had 2.895 billion views on YouTube, a notch under See You Again, which was featured in the 2015 action movie Furious 7.

See You Again intersperses scenes from the film with Wiz Khalifa rapping and Charlie Puth singing as they overlook a sandy coast. The song was a tribute to Paul Walker, an actor in The Fast and Furious film franchise who died in a car wreck.

Psy's triumph was all the more striking due to the overwhelming dominance of English-language music on global charts.

In a new example, Despacito - a Spanish-language reggaeton song by Puerto Rican star Luis Fonsi and rapper Daddy Yankee -- has reigned for nine weeks at the top of the US Billboard singles chart.

The Despacito video is already the fifth most-watched on YouTube at 2.486 billion views even though it was released just this year.

Once historic when Psy crossed the threshold, a total of 68 clips have passed the one billion view mark on YouTube, all but three of them music videos.

84 GB Data, Unlimited Calls With New Rs. 348 Pack of Aircel Offers do effect on Reliance Jio plan

Reliance Jio Effect: Aircel Offers 84GB Data, Unlimited Calls With New Rs. 348 Pack

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Rs. 348 pack comes with 1GB data per day, unlimited calls
  • It is available only in UP (East) circle at present
  • This Aircel pack is a response to the new Rs. 399 Jio plan
Reliance Jio launched its new plans just two days ago, and the competition has already started releasing new packs to ensure they don’t lose customers. The Mukesh Ambani-backed operator has extended its Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan Offer with a new Rs. 399 plan, which provides Jio Prime members 1GB data per day, unlimited calls and SMSes, and subscription to Jio apps for 84 days. To compete with this new Jio plan, Aircel has launched a new prepaid pack, priced at Rs. 348, which will give users 1GB of data and unlimited calls for 84 days as well, totalling 84GB data for the period.

The new Aircel recharge pack, named FRC 348, is available only in UP East at present. The user will be able to make unlimited calls (both local and STD) to any network for the 84-day validity period with this pack, with no daily or weekly limit to the number of bundled minutes. The Internet speeds, however, are capped to 3G only; on the other hand, the Reliance Jio network is claimed to deliver only 4G speeds.

Rajiv Gupta, Circle Business Head – UP (East), Aircel, said, “FRC 348 is by far the best value proposition in the market as the offer is open for all customers with all types of handsets be it 2G, 3G or 4G. This pack is especially designed considering the customers’ need for accessing high volumes of data to seamlessly connect with their family members through video chatting, social networking or streaming videos as well as making voice calls without worrying about their balance.”

Aircel’s new pack is likely only the first to launch with an eye towards keeping Jio at bay, and more can be expected soon. Reliance Jio has been upending the telecom industry since it launched operations in September last year. Apart from launching its new plans services two days ago, it also revised the existing plans to offer more validity and more data at the same price point. This move comes as the Jio Summer Surprise offer, launched in April to deliver free services for 90 days, expires for many consumers.

Google Earth to Let Users Post Stories, Photos in Coming Years

Alphabet Inc wants users to post millions of stories, video and photos on its Google Earth platform in the next few years, the program chief said on Tuesday at a launch event in Brazil for content focused on showcasing the Amazon rainforest.

The "Voyager" tool allows Internet surfers to take interactive tours of exotic destinations on Google Earth led by the likes of primatologist Jane Goodall, with photos, information and maps.

However, regular users will be able to create their own unedited content for private or public use within two to three years, Google Earth Director Rebecca Moore told Reuters.

"The story of your family history, the story of your favourite hiking trip - it could be anything. It doesn't have to be profound," she said at the event in Sao Paulo.

Moore took the stage at an event in Sao Paulo to unveil the "I am the Amazon" project, which has mapped 11 sites to document the relationship between the rainforest and its people, touching on topics like food, water and cultural origins.

To tell the stories of communities such as the Yanomami people, Cinta Larga and the Boa Vista Quilombola, Google and partners used tools like 3D cameras to accompany satellite images with videos and text.

Moore did not reveal the budget for the project but she ruled out the idea of advertising on the platform and said it is not Google's intention to turn a profit from the venture.

"Google Earth is our gift to the world," she told Reuters. "In terms of budget, Google has nice revenue from advertising, and not everything Google does has to make money."

iOS 11 Live Broadcast Feature Spotted in Developer Preview

iOS 11 Live Broadcast Feature Spotted in Developer Preview

HIGHLIGHTS

  • iOS 11 could bring live streaming to iOS devices
  • The option to start a broadcast was spotted in the latest iOS 11 beta
  • It should roll out to those in the iOS public beta soon
Although iOS 11 is expected to debut with the iPhone 8 (or iPhone X or Anniversary iPhone or whatever Apple decides to call this year’s new iPhone), the iOS 11 beta is publicly available to try out. And while it brings some much needed features like Files and Screen Recording, the latest update to the iOS 11 developer beta brings native live streaming functionality.

According to those in the iOS 11 developer preview, so called as it is only accessible by registered developers, the option to ‘Start Broadcast’ now exists in iOS 11 beta 3, in addition to the aforementioned Screen Recording. If you’re a part of the iOS 11 public beta, this update should hit you in a few days. With the ability to start a live stream on your iPhone or iPad on the go, one could wonder if Apple is starting its own broadcast service akin to Twitch, YouTube, and Microsoft’s Mixer. What’s more likely though, is tying it into existing services.

Considering that streaming is a large part of gaming culture, this feature could be an acknowledgement of this and perhaps a sign that Apple considers its iOS devices to be viable for gaming and streaming. Perhaps what’s more interesting is that it could see live streaming go mainstream if executed with the polish we’ve come to expect from Apple.

In addition to this, here’s the iOS 11 beta 3 changelog.

iOS 11 beta 3 features

  • Refined 3D Touch interface for the Camera app in Control Center. Similar UI changes can also be seen in the 3D Touch overlay view for the Notes Control Center shortcut.
  • The Cover Sheet of Notification Center has been refined. It now shows all notifications immediately when swiped into view; a second upward gesture to see older notifications is no longer necessary.
  • On iPad, you can now remove apps from multitasking with an upward swipe gesture. The close button ‘x’ interface seen in beta 1 and beta 2 has been replaced with the swipe interaction.
  • Improved Springboard responsiveness  when dragging and dropping. App icons now more closely track with finger gestures when dragging around.
  • Messages in iCloud reports fine-grained update progress in Settings.
  • Mail correctly remembers if it is open in 3-column mode on larger 12.9-inch iPad displays, when switching between full screen and split-screen presentations.
  • Smart Invert is now applied more correctly across the operating system.
  • In TV Provider settings, users can sign up with their local provider even if it doesn’t support Single-Sign On yet.
  • App Store settings now include a preference for whether to auto play videos. Users can pick to disable autoplaying video entirely or only when on cellular networks.
  • OS X Server is listed in the Files app; not yet functional.
  • The UI for 3D Touch previews for Safari has been tweaked.
  • For developers, SafariServices offers a new API to improve the authentication flow for onboarding. For instance, when Facebook is updated, a user that is logged in to the web app can be automatically logged into the native app without entering a password.

Microsoft Windows Phone officially dies today

Microsoft is killing off Windows Phone 8.1 support today, more than three years after the company first introduced the update. The end of support marks an end to the Windows Phone era, and the millions of devices still running the operating system. While most have accepted that the death of Windows Phone occurred more than a year ago, AdDuplex estimates that nearly 80 percent of all Windows-powered phones are still running Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8, or Windows Phone 8.1. All of these handsets are now officially unsupported, and only 20 percent of all Windows phones are running the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS.
Windows Phone 8.1 was a big update to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system, and included the company’s Cortana digital assistant. A new notification center, UI changes, and updates to the core mobile OS. It marked one of Microsoft’s biggest efforts with its Windows Phone work, but it wasn't successful at competing with Android and iOS. 99.6 percent of all new smartphones now run Android or iOS, and Microsoft has given up producing its own Lumia-branded hardware as a result.

While Microsoft still supports Windows 10 Mobile, it’s not clear what that support will include in the future. Microsoft pushed updates to Windows Phone 8 devices, but the software giant barely included any feature updates in the recent Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update. Microsoft is adding a number of features to the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update for PCs, but the company has not extended these to the mobile version in testing. Some rumors suggest that Microsoft has forked its Windows Mobile development into a “feature2” branch that will simply maintain the operating system until support ends in 2018 .
Microsoft has shied away from officially killing off its phone OS efforts, but it’s been evident over the past year that the company is no longer focusing its efforts on Windows for phones.Microsoft gutted its phone business last year, resulting in thousands of job cuts. During Microsoft’s recent Build and Inspire conferences, CEO Satya Nadella dropped the company’s mantra of “mobile-first, cloud-first” in favor of a focus on what he describes as the intelligent cloud and intelligent edge. This new area of focus means Microsoft is now working on multi-device scenarios and cloud-powered technologies that don’t always involve Windows. Microsoft’s new mobile strategy now appears to involve making iOS and Android devices better .

5 things you should know about Airtel’s ‘Postpaid Promise’

In an industry first, Indian telecom operator Airtel announced that it’s postpaid customers will now be able to carry over their unused mobile data to next month. This benefit will be offered to postpaid customers under Airtel’s Postpaid Promise program which is a part of Airtel’s Project Next.
airtel-postpaid-promise
Well, that’s not the only thing though that Airtel postpaid customers are offered under the Postpaid Promise program. Customers are also offered savings on family plans, coverage of expenses on mobile damage and much more. Let’s take a detailed look at all of them.

1) Data Roll Over Promise

Like we already said, Airtel postpaid customers will now be able to roll over their unused mobile data to next month which means that their mobile data won’t be wasted. For example, if you have 1.5 GB of unused data for the month of June and have 5 GB of data for the month of July, then, you will have a total of 6.5 GB of mobile data which can be used for the month of July.

2) One plan for your entire family

Airtel postpaid customers no longer need to subscribe to different plans for different family members. They can now buy one postpaid plan for their entire family and can also save up to 20% on their mobile bills. Airtel has also made it easier to add a family member to the family plan. Customers just need to download the myAirtel app, click on the family banner, add family member(s) to their plan and ask them to verify via SMS. That’s it. Besides, members under the Family Plan can also share their Internet along with other members of the plan.

3) Protection to smartphone against accidental/liquid damage and malware

Airtel has also introduced ‘Airtel Secure’ which offers various types of security to postpaid customer’s smartphone. First is the accidental/liquid damage protection under which if the customer’s smartphone is damaged, Airtel will arrange for its pick-up and get it repaired from an authorized service center. Once the smartphone is repaired, it will be delivered back to the customer. This solution is available to the smartphones that are up to two years old.
Airtel Secure also comes with Norton Mobile Security Suite which comes with anti-malware and app advisor. It also offers web protection so that users are safe from phishing and other malicious websites. Postpaid customers can get this handset damage protection and protection against malware for as low as ₹49/month.

4) Free calls on National and International Roaming

Roaming, be it national or international, is where customers end up paying more for receiving the calls. Well, Airtel is now offering its postpaid customers unlimited incoming calls on national roaming and international roaming. Plans for international roaming differ by country, however, there are national roaming plans which are offering unlimited incoming as well as outgoing calls.

5) Free Airtel TV subscription

Postpaid customers will be offered content from Eros Now, HOOQ, Sony LIV, YouTube and Dailymotion for free on Airtel TV app.
So, that’s what Airtel’s postpaid customers will get under it’s Postpaid Promise program. You can head on to Airtel’s website to know more.

Now Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) gets Samsung Pay Mini feature with June Security Patch in India

We got to take a look at Samsung Pay Mini in India on the Galaxy J7 Max released weeks earlier. Launched alongside the J7 Pro, the J7 Max features Samsung’s mobile payment service for mid range phones. While the J7 Pro has the full Samsung Pay service onboard. Now Samsung Pay Mini is rolling out to other mid-range devices as well.
galaxy J7 (2016) Samsung Pay mini update
The first phone to receive the feature as an update is the Galaxy j7 (2016) (SM-J710F). The update will hit the device with build number J710FXXU3AQF6. The update isn’t exactly very hefty, weighing only 136.32 MB. If you haven’t received the update, you can head on to the Settings > About > Software Update menu to manually search for the update.

Think of Samsung Pay Mini as a Samsung Pay on diet. It only supports UPI and mobile wallet integration. So, you can’t use it to pay money via debit & credit cards. That means you won’t be able to use it with regular swiping machines for offline payments, unlike Samsung Pay.

399 Plan Reliance Jio Launches New Plans; Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan for Benefits Continue

Reliance Jio Launches New Plans; Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan Benefits Continue With Rs. 399 Pack
HIGHLIGHTS
There are two new Rs. 349 and Rs. 399 prepaid Jio plans introduced
Rs. 309 and Rs. 509 plans now offer 56 days validity
Two new postpaid plans of Rs. 349 and Rs. 399 have also been added
Reliance Jio has launched new plans for prepaid and postpaid users as the Jio Summer Surprise comes to an end. The operator has extended its Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer with the new Rs. 399 pack, continuing the low-cost services for another three recharge cycles. Along with launching new Jio plans, the company has revised its existing plans by extending their validities and increasing the bundled data while keeping the prices the same. This is the revision of Jio plans since April, when the company phased out the Rs. 303 and Rs. 499 packs in favour of the Rs. 309 and Rs. 509 packs.

Reliance Jio prepaid plans
The Rs. 309 and Rs. 509 prepaid Jio plans still remain, while two other plans have been added into the mix. The Rs. 309 plan offers all the same benefits of unlimited data (1GB per day), voice and SMS calling benefits, but with 56 days of validity instead of 28 days. The Rs. 509 plan also remains the same but with 56 days of validity (against 28 days earlier) and daily 4G data usage cap at 2GB per day. The Rs. 349 and Rs. 399 packs are part of the company's new Every Day More Value (EDMV) plans, under which it promises to deliver "20 percent more value than competitors' best plans."

New plans include the Rs. 349 plan that gives you 20GB of 4G data for 56 days with no cap on consumption, and when the data is exhausted the Internet speed will reduce to 128kbps. The Rs. 399 plan is similar to the Rs. 309 plan in terms of daily data allowance, but bumps up validity to 84 days. That’s because the customer care confirmed that Reliance Jio is still offering the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer only on Rs. 399 plan, with 84-day validity.

Apart from these changes, all the other plans remain the same with first recharge benefits provided with Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan Offer now gone from the mix. The starting prepaid plan is as low as Rs. 19 which gives you only one-day validity, 200MB of 4G data, and unlimited SMS and voice calling facilities. The Rs. 49 plan gives you a 3-day validity and 600MB of 4G data with similar voice and SMS calling benefits. There’s also a Rs. 96 plan which gives you a 7-day validity with unlimited data of up to 1GB per day, after which you can use the Internet at 128kbps speeds.

The Rs. 149 plan gives you 28 days of validity but offers only 2GB of 4G data for usage, and 300 free SMSes. The Rs. 999 plan gives you a 90-day validity, 90GB of 4G data, on completion of which you Internet speed will reduce to 128kbps. The Rs. 1,999 plan offers a 120-day validity, 155GB of data, and after you drain this data, you Internet speed will be at 128kbps. The Rs. 4,999 and Rs. 9,999 plans will offer 210 and 390 days of validity respectively, with 380GB and 780GB of data benefit respectively. Once you exhaust this data, your Internet speed will then be at 128kbps only. All voice calls in all the plans are free.

Relaince Jio postpaid plans
Postpaid plans are available at Rs. 309, Rs. 349, Rs. 399, Rs. 509, and Rs. 999 denominations with validity lasting up to three months and different benefits offered in different plans. The new plans introduced are at Rs. 349 and Rs. 399 which offer two months and three months of validity. The Rs. 349 plan offers 20GB of 4G data after which the speed drops to 128kbps. The Rs. 399 plan offers unlimited 4G data with the 1GB per day cap and other unlimited voice and SMS benefits. All the new prepaid and postpaid plans are now available on the Jio website, where you can see them detailed.

Now Alleged LG Q6 receives FCC certification, US launch imminent

Around an hour ago, we told you that the LG G6 Mini is said to be launched as LG Q6. We also told you that it carries model number M700 and has reached FCC. Well, another LG smartphone which carries model number M700TV has been certified by FCC, and, this might be a variant of the LG Q6.
LG G6
The FCC listing of this alleged Q6 doesn’t reveal any information about its specs apart from revealing that it’s running Android Nougat, however, thanks to Evan Blass, we do know what the actual Q6 will be coming with.
According to Blass, the LG Q6 will come with a single 13 MP camera at the back, have 3 GB RAM and feature a display having 18:9 aspect ratio. While Blass didn’t reveal the size of the display, the Q6 is rumored to come with a 5.4-inch display while flaunting a bezel-less design akin to the G6.

As evident from this bit of information, the Q6 will be a toned down version of the G6 with a smaller display, lesser RAM and single camera at the back, however, it might come with the same chipset that was found on the G6, i.e, the Snapdragon 821 SoC.
According to Blass, the LG Q6 carries model number M700, and, the LG smartphone that has been certified by FCC carries model number M700TV, which, like we said earlier, might be one of the variant of the Q6. Well, we wonder what difference both the devices will have.
Also, now that this alleged variant of Q6 has been certified by FCC, we expect it to be launched soon in the US. We will have to wait for more information about the LG Q6 to pour over the Internet.

Now Samsung Galaxy Note8 might have 64 GB & 128 GB storage variants

New rumors regarding the Galaxy Note8 are vouching for two variants of the device. The two variants differing only by their storage size. The rumor by OSEN media says a Samsung official has revealed this tidbit of info.
The phone will have a 64 gig variant and a 128 gig variant. As opposed to the Galaxy Note 7 which had a 64 gig variant only. Apart from that, they will also be equipped with a microSD card slot for up to 256 GB memory expansion.
galaxynote8
Moreover, the same source also quoted the official saying the Galaxy Note8 will cost $1000. And add to that another $100 if it is not the country of origin. Well, all this points to one thing. Samsung wants to compete with Apple in the price segment as well. As it is already believed the iPhone 8 will be the most expensive device Apple has ever made. However, you will also be getting an unparalleled flagship experience.

Further, consistent leaks have shown the humongous phablet will sport a 6.3-inch Infinity Display, a Snapdragon 836 or an Exynos 8895 chip, at least 6 GB of RAM and dual cameras at the back. Sadly, no on-screen fingerprint technology this year from Samsung.
